Zhangzhou Glove Puppet Show

Zhangzhou, renowned as a "Coastal Region of Confucian Scholars," is one of the birthplaces of Minnan (闽南,Southern Fujian) culture and a nationally renowned historical and cultural city. The Zhangzhou Glove Puppet Heritage and Protection Center was established in 1959. The art of glove puppet performance is acclaimed as "world-class art" and "a unique Chinese marvel," while the carving of puppet heads is praised as an "oriental artistic treasure." Both "Zhangzhou Glove Puppet Show" and "Zhangzhou Puppet Head Carving" are inscribed on the first national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.

Zhangzhou Puppet Art Performance Hall

The students visited the Puppet Art Performance Hall to watch the "2024 'Gather in the Ancient City, Meet Puppets in the New Year'" performance, enjoying the art of puppetry together. Zhangzhou glove puppet show, Quanzhou marionette puppet show, Dongshan iron-stick puppet show, Tianjin rod puppet show, Mount Tai shadow puppet show, and Chengdu hand shadow puppet show presented unique and distinctive performances, showcasing the beauty and diversity of puppet cultures. The exquisite performances drew frequent applause from the students.

Zhangzhou Museum

The students visited the Zhangzhou Museum. Wandering through the various exhibition halls, from the "Blue Sea and Sails" Maritime Silk Road route to the "Long River Song" highlighting local characteristics, through the exhibits, everyone gained a deeper understanding of the profound cultural heritage of this thousand-year-old ancient city.

Through this study tour, the students not only experienced firsthand the unique historical atmosphere of Zhangzhou and the distinctive charm of puppet and shadow art, but also expressed that this activity opened a window for them to understand local traditional culture and experience folk customs, cultivating their love for traditional culture and their desire to inherit it.
