In the past five years, Xiamen University has received over 300,000 books from worldwide universities after it launched its “Book Donation Program” in 2009, according to the curator of Xiamen University Library.
The university started the program for its palace-like new library at its Xiang’an campus, which boasts the largest single-building library among all college and universities in China.
Since the launch of the program, Xiamen University has received about 10 containers of books annually from many universities, including Israel's University of Haifa, the New York Academy of Medical Sciences, Portland State University, Tokyo University and Hong Kong University.
Mr. Xiao Dehong, curator of the Xiamen University Library, said Xiamen Customs were a great help for this program, as it is demanding and laboring work for Xiamen Customs to grant clearance for those books, and it helped to set up a special stack room for the donated books.
