Opening of TCFL Direction of Undergraduate Chinese

As Chinese learners increase dramatically, the need for TCFL teachers grows rapidly all around the world. Therefore, XMUOEC decides to activate TCFL direction of Undergraduate Chinese language major. Up until now, there are totally three major directions in our undergraduate Chinese language program, namely business Chinese, Chinese culture and TCFL.

Major direction: Teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL)
Length of study: 4 years, 160 credits, including 2 years of Chinese language study and 2 years of major direction courses.
Degree: Bachelor of Arts
Diploma: Graduation certificate for undergraduate Chinese language Major of Xiamen University (TCFL, under complete credit system); Junior college graduation certificate for those who only complete the first two years’ Chinese language study (80 credits).

Fees:
Registration fee: 400 RMB
Tuition: 16,000 RMB/year for Grade 1 and 2; 18,000 RMB/year for Grade 3 and 4
Insurance: Group integrated insurance for overseas students of around 600 RMB/year
Other necessary everyday costs

Qualification for enrolment: over 18 years old, high school graduates or above, healthy foreigners
Documents to be submitted:
1. Application form of Xiamen University for Chinese language students
2. Passport and graduation certificate copy (high school or above)
3. HSK certificate and grades if available
4. Transcript of Chinese courses completed

Qualifications for exemption from the first one or two years of study:
1. Holders of HSK 3 can apply to join the second year of the program.
2. Holders of HSK 6 can apply to join the third year of the program.
3. Students who have achieved 80 credits of required courses verified by OEC are eligible to apply and, with the approval from OEC, join the third year of the program.
4. Students who have passed the third-grade entrance exam can apply to join the third year of the program and are required to pass HSK 6 before graduation.
5. Holders of HSK 5 can apply to join the third year of the program and is required to pass HSK 6 before graduation.

Courses:
1. Public course: A Brief Survey of China, 2 credits, compulsory
2. Chinese main courses:
Grade 1 & 2: elementary Chinese, intermediate Chinese (part 1), elementary Chinese listening and speaking, intermediate Chinese listening (part 1), elementary oral Chinese, intermediate oral Chinese (part 1), elementary Chinese reading, intermediate Chinese reading (part 1), elementary Chinese writing, totally 82 credits, at least 70 credits required.
Grade 3 & 4: intermediate Chinese (part 2), advanced Chinese, intermediate Chinese listening (part 2), intermediate oral Chinese (part 2), advanced oral Chinese, intermediate Chinese reading (part 2), basic Chinese writing, advanced Chinese listening, translation, totally 61 credits, at least 42 credits required.
3. Major direction courses: modern Chinese (grammar, lexicology and Rhetoric, 6 credits to be completed in 3 semesters), TCFL teaching theories and methods, methodology in teaching Chinese language, educational psychology, Chinese contemporary and modern literature, general introduction to Chinese culture, ancient literature of China, geography of China, totally 27 credits.
4. Graduation thesis and language field practice: 9 credits including 3 credits for field practice and 6 for thesis.
5. Other optional courses.
