Air quality in Siming ranks first in Xiamen

Siming District was ranked first and Jimei District last on a list of air quality in Xiamen City published by the Ministry of Environmental Protection on June 25th.

According to the list that ranked the AQI (air quality index) for Xiamen between June 19th and June 25th, Siming District took first place, followed by Huli District, Haicang District, Xiang’an District then Tong’an District, with Jimei District bottom.

Among the six factors determining air quality, nitrogen dioxide was the biggest contributor to the AQI of Siming District and Jimei District, hence remedies will be rolled out to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides. The high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, ozone, PM2.5 and sulphur dioxide accounted for the lower-ranking of Jimei District.

Ozone was the biggest contributor to the AQI of Huli District, Haicang District and Xiang’an District, thus photochemical pollution will be further controlled. In Tong’an District, however, emissions of inhalable particulate matters will have to be reduced since PM10 accounts for the greatest part to the district’s AQI rating.
