About 93% of the students from Xiamen University’s Siming campus showed their strong opposition in a questionnaire about the university’s stone path project, which will replace concrete paths at the university campus with stone paths.
The stone path project was originally revealed on the official Wechat account of the university journal Yan Yan (言炎), which drew wide attention from its readers.
The stone path project is said to be part of renovation project for the 95th anniversary of the university, with which the university will unify the architecture style of the paths in the university.
Students who opposed the project said the stone paths are too bumpy for bicycle riders and high-heel wearers.
The university authority has stated there are many stones that were unearthed in previous construction projects and the stone path project presents a good chance to use the discarded stones. The spokesman also promised the students that the stones will be polished before being laid.
About 7 years ago, a controversy over concrete paths and stone paths was ignited at the Jimei School Village when stone paths were replaced with concrete paths.
"I like walking on stone paths, which always bring me back to a peace of mind and closeness with nature. Personally, it’s part of university culture which helped me remember good memories of my university life on the campus,” said one graduate of Xiamen University.
