A young man in Xiamen city stirred up some buzz after he offered 100 yuan in prize money to those who dare to drink a glass of dirty water in front of his face.

The incident happened in Xiamen University on Nov 24, when the man, who declared himself to be a local student, challenged the crowd with increasing rewards of up to 500 yuan.

No one went for it eventually, and the bidder was driven away by security personnel.

While some criticized his behavior as a publicity stunt, the man insisted he was doing it for a charitable cause.

He said the whim of 100 yuan-for-dirty water occurred to him after failing a fundraising for a purified water project for people in water-deficient areas in western China.

"No one will drink it for even 500 yuan. But in the west (of China), the children have it every day,” he said.
