On 29 January 2026, the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton hosted a “Welcome to the Year of the Horse” workshop at its Bohunt Horsham School teaching site. Pupils from two local primary schools took part in hands-on activities celebrating the Chinese Spring Festival.

The workshop featured calligraphy and paper-cutting sessions. Under the guidance of Teacher Hu Jiaru, pupils learned basic brush techniques and explored the meaning of the Chinese characters for “horse” and “blessing.” In the paper-cutting session, led by Teacher Sarah Dawson, children created playful designs and enjoyed a lively “blindfolded pasting” game.

The event filled the campus with festive spirit and provided a valuable opportunity for young learners to experience Chinese culture while strengthening China–UK cultural exchange.
