According to Xiamen University, the construction on its first overseas campus in Malaysia started on May 16th, and a formal founding ceremony will be held in early July.

The setting up of the campus is of great historical significance because it is not only the first time that the Chinese government has allowed one of its universities to set up a campus abroad, but also because it represents the ‘return’ of Xiamen University to Malaysia where its founder Tan Kah Kee grew up and made most of his fortune.

Xiamen University, listed among the top 20 universities in China, was founded by the Chinese-Malaysian rubber magnate in 1921. Mr. Tan Kah Kee also founded Jimei University in his hometown, Jimei, Xiamen.

The campus, which is expected to cost 600 million ringgit (about 1.26 billion yuan, or 200 million US dollars) to set up, will be built on a 900-mu site at Salak Tinggi in the Sepang district of Selangor.

The university is expected to welcome its first students in September 2015.
