The first Tree Climbing Competition was held in Xiamen University on May 24th, attracting thousands of citizens and many media outlets. It was also the first competition following the international standard for tree climbing competitions.

The competition consisted of 3 programs: Belayed Speed Climb, Secured Footlock, and Throwline. The competition followed the international standard for tree climbing competitions, with its key point being to protect both the climbers and the trees. According to staff, all the trees were equipped with tree protectors before the competition.
Xiamen University opened its tree-climbing course in 2012. It is the first university on the mainland to offer a tree-climbing course,
