Xiamen University recently purchased 10 pianos and placed them in public places around campus. According to University officials, these 10 pianos are open to teachers and students of the school, and they can play them without an application during the specified hours.
The 10 pianos have been placed in lobbies, student affairs sections, and at the coffee shops on the Siming and Xiang’an campuses. The University put a lot of thought into the locations to make sure the pianos will neither influence the regular teaching order nor be too secluded to be found.
Considering normal class times, the University drew up the opening time of 11:40 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. as hours the pianos will be available and open for use.
The suggestion to set up free pianos was made by a student when she was having a breakfast meeting with the President of Xiamen University, Zhu Chongshi. The breakfast meeting is a traditional activity held between the President and the students of Xiamen University regularly.
According to University officials, more free pianos are expected to be placed around the University at a later time.
