85829 international students and scholars came to study in China in 2002, up 38.7% than that of 2001, according to the statistics of the China Scholarship Council. These students distributed in 395 higher education institutions in the mainland. 7.08% (6074) enjoy Chinese governmental scholarships. Among the total, 16309 are undergraduates, 2858 master candidates and 1389 doctorate candidates. Students from ROK take up 36093, followed by Japan (16084) and US (7359). Beijing Language and Culture University remains the leading position in receiving international students (9112), followed by Peking University (4189) and Fudan University (3324).
