According to reports, the “Design Guidelines for the Curbside Strip of the Xiamen City (Trial)” was formally put into operation on October 31st.

The “curbside strip” is defined as the area from the outermost curbstone to the red line on the road, which is the main passage for walkers and cyclists. According to the “design guideline”, the sidewalk and the bike lane should be put into top priority when building a road, and the width of the sidewalk and bike lane should be top priority when there is not enough space for the road.

The guideline also stated that a 2-way bike lane should be added to newly built roads or roads undergoing reconstructions. As for the roads with limited conditions, the construction units are suggested to build a one-way bike lane along two sides of the supporting roads, or build a 2-way bike lane along one side of the supporting road.

It is also specified in the guideline that the urban road should take effective measures to prevent vehicles from driving on the curbside strip.
