I. Introduction to the scholarship
The Chinese International Education College /Overseas Education College at Xiamen University (XMU) has established the “XMU Chinese International Education College / Overseas Education College Confucius Institute (CI) Scholarship for International Students” (hereinafter referred to as the “CI Scholarship”) to promote the spirit of Mr. Tan Kah Kee, encourage and attract outstanding international students to apply for studying in the XMU Chinese International Education College / Overseas Education College, and help cultivate international talents at XMU. The CI Scholarship is funded by alumni Dr. Naiyun Chi and M.C.S. Steel Xiamen Co., Ltd.
II. Requirements for application
1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good mental and physical health, and possess a valid regular passport.
2. Applicants should hold a senior high school diploma and have a satisfactory academic record to qualify for university admission.
3. Applicants should be studying at a Confucius Institute co-built by XMU or its partner university, or be recommended by such an institution, with preference given to those from underprivileged backgrounds.
4. Applicants should not exceed 30 years of age (as of September 1 of the year of admission).
5. Applicants who have already received any other scholarship are not eligible for the CI Scholarship.

IV. Duration of the scholarship
1. The undergraduate program lasts four years, and the maximum duration of the scholarship is not more than four academic years.
2. Scholarship recipients will be assessed annually in accordance with the relevant scholarship regulations. Only those meeting the required standards will have their scholarship renewed for the subsequent year. Recipients who fail to pass the annual assessment will no longer be eligible for the scholarship. The specific regulations and methods will be subject to the latest notification issued in the year when the evaluation is conducted.
V. Number of scholarship recipients
The scholarship will be available to 10 students in 2025. The final number of scholarship recipients is subject to the approval of the CI Scholarship Leadership Group.
VI. Scholarship details
1. Funding amount and coverage types:
This scholarship provides RMB 40,000 per year. This amount covers tuition fees, insurance premiums, accommodation, and living expenses. Any excess expense beyond the scholarship amount will be borne by the student.
2. Funds distribution: Scholarship funds will first cover tuition fees, insurance premiums, and accommodation costs, with the remainder provided as living expenses on a monthly basis.
3. Students who choose to live on campus must pay accommodation and utility fees at the prescribed rates. The College will enforce strict attendance management for scholarship recipients; those with an attendance rate below 70% will have their living expenses suspended for the subsequent month.

VIII. Application procedures
Applicants for the CI Scholarship must be recommended by an XMU partner university or co-built Confucius Institute. Eligibility for the scholarship is contingent upon formal enrollment at XMU.

IX. Selection process and announcement of results
The selection of scholarship candidates is based on the principles of openness, fairness, impartiality, and merit-based assessment. The College will evaluate applicants’ academic performance, language proficiency, academic ability, recommendation letters, and overall competence according to the procedures of assessment. The Leadership Group will review and determine the list of recipients.
