According to the Tong’an government and the construction unit at Wengong Academy, the renovation of the academy is drawing to a close and the academy is expected to be reopened to the public by the end of this month.

With a total investment of RMB 600,000, the renovation of the academy is highlighted by a statue of Zhuxi and a stone inscription. The Zhuxi statue was designed by the Xiamen Academy of Arts and Design from Fuzhou University. The stone inscription was carved with Zhuxi’s famous article “Bu Zi Qi Wen”.

Zhu Xi was a Song Dynasty Confucian scholar who became the leading figure of the School of Principle and the most influential rationalist Neo-Confucian in China. His contributions to Chinese philosophy include his assigning special significance to the Analects of Confucius, Mencius, the Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean (the Four Books), his emphasis on the investigation of things (gewu), and his work on the synthesis of all fundamental Confucian concepts. These contributions formed the basis of bureaucracy and government for over 700 years in China.

Wengong Academy, or Ziyang Academy, is the oldest known academy in the Xiamen Prefecture.
