Xiamen signed a memorandum with Wellington for the construction of a "Chinese Garden" on 21st November. Based on plans, the construction of the "Chinese Garden" will start in the heart of Wellington in the near future and is expected to be finished by the end of 2016.
"The garden will be recognizably Chinese but at the same time it will tell the story of the Chinese arrival, settlement and integration into New Zealand, and the contribution of the Chinese community to the fabric of Wellington," Cai Yunjia, the director of the Xiamen Gardens Administration Bureau, said after the signing ceremony.
"Xiamen and Wellington are both well-known garden cities in the world. Building a ‘Chinese Garden’ that integrates elements of the two cities can help expand the influence of our country and enhance the popularity of Xiamen," Mr. Cai said.
As a sister city of Wellington, the Xiamen government promised to gift certain granites and garden ornaments for the project. The Xiamen Garden Bureau will also try their best to support the construction of the Chinese Garden.
