A Xiamen delegation led by Xiamen Mayor Liu Keqing recently paid a visit to Wellington, New Zealand. During the visit, the Wellington government has expressed their hope in opening a direct air route flying between Xiamen and Wellington. Liu responded positively to the proposal by setting aside time to conduct an investigation into the Wellington Airport before leaving the city.
Due to the special relationship between the 3 cities of Xiamen, Wellington, and Sydney, there is a high chance of a “Xiamen-Sydney-Wellington” air route being opened in the near future.
Xiamen Airlines purchased a total of 6 Boeing 787 Dreamliners this year, which are expected to accelerate the opening of the air route flying between Xiamen and European countries.
The cooperation between Xiamen and New Zealand has seen rapid growth in recent years. In the first 9 months of 2014, the imported goods from New Zealand to Xiamen valued $275 million, up 63.44% compared with the same period of the previous year.
During the Xiamen delegation’s visit, a “Memorandum of Understanding on Enhancing Friendly Cooperation to Improve Relations Between the Two Cities” was signed between Xiamen and Wellington. According to the memorandum, the two cities will carry out more cooperation in various areas, such as government communications, economic cooperation, educational communications, and cultural communications, etc in the future.
